Vogue Magazine Fail At Diversity

Some astounding statistics were reported in Time Magazine’s December 3rd issue. It seems that Vogue Magazine could use more than a little diversity when it comes to who graces their covers.

4

Number of black men who have appeared on the cover of Men’s Vogue since it launched in 2005 (Tiger Woods, Barack Obama, Denzel Washington and Will Smith)

3

Number of black women who have appeared on Vogue’s cover since the magazine was founded in 1892

I find it pretty interesting that in 115 years, only 3 black women have been on the cover of Vogue. Vogue has been printing monthly since 1892. That’s 12 issues a year, for 115 years. That’s 1,380 covers, and only 3 have showcased black women. Absurd.

What is even more ironic is that Men’s Vogue has only been around for 2 years, and while having 4 black men on the cover is a substantial disproportion to the 20 covers issued (10 issues per year) it boggles me that they have 1 up on their female counterpart, which has had 1380 issues.

Go figure.

  1. Those numbers are wrong. There have been way more than 3 women on the cover of vogue. I can think of at least six covers that I’ve seen in my life time.
